Barbara Shelley’s transformation from frigid, boring wife to sensuous, hissing vampire in Dracula, Prince of Darkness has to rate as the best performance ever in a Hammer movie. Even today, 50 years on, the sight of her writhing about trying to bite chunks out of some tormenting monks still chills. Years ago she took me to task for painting her ‘too sexy’. Hopefully this time I’ve stayed within the bounds of good taste although it’ll be a first if I have!
